The incident occurred in Orange County around 12:40 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 26, in Crawford.
According to the Crawford Police Department, responding officers found the pickup truck had driven into the Dunkin' building at Route 52 and Boniface Drive.
An investigation found that Orange County resident Eric Schrader, age 44, of Pine Bush, was driving eastbound on Route 52 when he entered the westbound lane, exited the roadway, and struck the Dunkin' building, police said.
The building, which was not open at the time, was severely damaged, preventing the responding officers from entering until the arrival of rescue units.
Police said the Pine Bush Fire Department and Orange County Fire Control, along with building collapse units from Monticello and the surrounding area, secured the building. Schrader was rescued around 2:30 a.m.
Schrader sustained severe head trauma and a variety of other injuries. He was transported to Garnet Medical Center in Middletown, which has him listed in serious condition, police said.
The Town of Crawford Building Inspector has deemed the building unsafe and has issued a demolition permit.
The property owner has since begun the demolition process.
